Natchez

Natchez is the home of modern southern hospitality. There you'll find a diverse, vibrant town rooted in history and rich cultural legacy, the perfect stage for diverse and fascinating local stories and characters.

 

From historic sites and museums, the arts, shopping, music & nightlife, spas & saloons, sports and the great outdoors, Natchez truly has a little something for everyone.

St. Francisville

St. Francisville is a small southern town filled with history and charm known for its uniqueness and slower pace of living. 

 

Located 22 miles north of Woodville, nestled in the hills of West Feliciana Parish, St. Francisville's topography, abundant wildlife and natural beauty certainly makes it a fabulous destination for outdoor exploration.

 

But you won't want to miss its downtown historic district boasting hundred year old homes, beautiful churches, ample shopping, and award winning restaurants. 

Main Street Market

Opened in 2004, The Main Street Market is an antiques mall that houses more than 24 vendors. In addition to antiques, the expansive collection of merchandise includeshand-made items, local art, gift items, and specialty food items.

Lake Mary

Lake Mary is located in Wilkinson County and is an exceptionally beautiful oxbow lake of the Mississippi River. It has a large fishing population, especially in April and May. Its shores are surrounded by lush forests and, at lower water levels, nice sandy beaches are available and are great for swimmers. Don't miss exploring the collection of islands that can be found throughout the lake.

Clark Creek Natural Area

The Clark Creek Natural Area in southwestern Mississippi is one of the Magnolia State's most beautiful outdoor treasures. Comprising more than 700 acres, it is highlighted by some 50 waterfalls, ranging in size 10 to more than 30 feet in height. Creation and protection of this fabulous area came about in 1978.


Steeply sloping loess bluff hills host a mixed hardwood and pine forest dominated by beech and magnolias.Uncommon trees found in the area are Southern sugar maple, serviceberry, umbrella tree, pyramid magnolia, chinquapin oak, big leaf snowball, silverbell, and witch-hazel.

Natchez Balloon Festival

The Natchez Balloon Festival, established in 1986, is a weekend of hot-air balloons and outstanding live music that has become the largest and most successful festival in Southwest Mississippi.

 

The festival site is located in historic downtown Natchez in the parklike grounds of the columned mansion Rosalie.

Angola Prison Rodeo

The longest running prison rodeo in the nation that first began in 1965. The rodeo continues as a behavioral incentive to reward offenders with good behavior to compete in various rodeo events, earn money in the competition, and sell hobby craft, inmate-made furniture, art, and jewelry. Inmate participation is entirely voluntary. Many offenders see the rodeo as a rare opportunity to feel a part of society outside of the gates and take pride in showcasing their talents.

 

The Angola Prison Rodeo is held twice a year; in the spring and fall. The penitentiary is at the end of Highway 66, around 39 miles southwest of Woodville via Highway 61.

Woodville Deer and Wildlife Festival

A celebration of the culinary, music, taxidermy and fine arts, the Woodville Deer and Wildlife Festival is hosted by the Woodville/Wilkinson County Main Street Association.
The annual event takes place in October.

Wilkinson County Park

Four miles to the north of Woodville on Highway 61 is the new Wilkinson County State Park which features a small lake for fishing, and trails for hiking and biking.

Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge

Located near the town of St. Francisville, Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge conserves some of the region's last naturally functioning bottomland hardwood forest habitat. The Mississippi River carved this unique landscape of ridges and swales, cypress-tupelo swamps, meandering drains and backwater sloughs. These features coupled with annual flooding provide highly productive habitat for diverse fish and wildlife including backwater fisheries, migratory songbirds, wintering waterfowl, Louisiana black bear, and other resident wildlife.

Historic Woodville Museums

Woodville is home to the Wilkinson County Museum and African American Museum.  The museums, which are both housed in historic buildings that date back to the 1800s, are filled with photos and artifacts. And since they’re located near each other, you can easily visit both museums.
